What Kind of Advanced Training Do You Have?
Dr. Tunnell is board certified in Periodontology and Dental Implant Surgery by the American Board of Periodontology. To become a specialist, he completed a three-year residency program after dental school at the Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry where he trained exclusively in periodontics, dental implants, oral medicine and IV sedation. As a resident, he developed a passion for minimally invasive periodontal and dental implant procedures, which he prefers due to their improved cosmetic outcomes with less discomfort to the patient. He is a fervent believer in the philosophy that teeth should be saved when possible, but that implants can be a great alternative when they can’t.
Dr. Tunnell has performed extensive research in periodontics and dental implants and has co-authored and published several articles in peer-reviewed journals while lecturing locally and internationally on a multitude of topics. Dr. Tunnell is also very involved in organized dentistry and serves on numerous committees in the dental and periodontal societies. He previously taught in the graduate periodontics department at Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry for several years before leaving to focus on private practice full time.
What Do You Like to Do Outside of the Periodontal Office?
Dr. Tunnell currently lives in Dallas with his wife, Jade, a registered dietitian and certified personal trainer, their three rowdy kids, and a Vizsla dog named Hugo. He is an avid garage gym enthusiast and spends his early mornings in his garage trying to stay in shape. When not in the garage, he loves spending time with his family, being outdoors, reading books, and traveling whenever possible.
