Frequently Asked Periodontal Questions – Dallas, TX
Ask Your Dallas Periodontist
One of the best ways to put a patient’s mind at ease is to simply answer their questions, which is why Dr. Tunnell is always willing to share whatever information someone might need so they can feel confident and comfortable about their care. Below, you’ll find his responses to some of his most common questions.
What is a periodontist?
A periodontist is a type of dental specialist that primarily finds, diagnoses, and treats conditions that affect the structures that support the teeth, namely the gums and nearby bone. This makes them experts when it comes to performing procedures like gum disease therapy and dental implant placement.
What is the difference between a periodontist and a general dentist?
Both a periodontist and general dentist have to go to dental school and graduate to practice dentistry. But, after this, a periodontist goes on to complete a specialty residency, during which they undergo advanced training focused on treating the gums and bone. Rather than providing a lot of different procedures like a general dentist, periodontists are more focused and can perform more complex procedures for patients dealing with gum disease and tooth loss.
Do I need a referral to visit a periodontist?
No! You can schedule an appointment with Dr. Tunnell yourself without a referral from your general dentist. While plenty of general dentists in the area do send their patients to him, you don’t have to go through your dentist if you’re thinking about getting dental implants or need help with gum disease.
My gums bleed when I brush my teeth. Do I have gum disease?
Maybe, or you might just be brushing and flossing your teeth with too much pressure. Try lightening up for a few days, and if the bleeding continues, then it is time to schedule an appointment with Dr. Tunnell, because you likely have a minor infection. Acting fast and getting the care you need will prevent a small problem from turning into a big one!
Do you take dental insurance?
Yes, Central Perio can accept plans from many dental insurance providers. We even handle the claims ourselves so patients can maximize their savings without having to fill out a bunch of paperwork. To get an estimate of how much your plan will cover at your visit, give our team a call today.
